SOAPST

In "Blood, Toil, Tears, and Sweat", a speech given by Winston Churchill; the text, audience, speaker, as well as a few other aspects contribute to making this speech achieve its goal. Winston Churchill's speech was given in England during May of 1940. He uses a positive and confident tone, to inform and to motivate the people of England about war and the recent change in government. It was the first speech Churchill made as Prime Minister of Britain. His confidence is seen when making a reference to "blood, toil, tears, and sweat", it motivates the people to do their best and it shows that Churchill is by their side. His postive tone in shown when Churchill says "...victory at all costs", it shows the people that Churchill is positive about the outcome of war which brings a sense of comfort to the situation. Toward the end, Churchill starts using pronouns such as "us"and "our". Winston Churchill says, "...let us go forward together with our united strength" making him one with the audience, it shows the people of England that they are not alone in it. The usage of the pronouns complete the relationship between the speaker, audience, and subject.

One of the Largest Fires in California History

125,000 acres have been burned in and around Yosemite National Park, this fire is considered one of California's largest wildfires in recent history. The fire has doubled in size since Thursday night and it is only 5% contained as of August 24, 2013. This wildfire is considered a "crown fire" because of it's tendency to burn and travel through the tree tops. More then 2,600 firefighters were working to contain the fire and keep it away from buildings and campgrounds. The firefighters have been assisted by trench-digging bulldozers and water-dropping aircrafts. The wildfire has destroyed nine buildings, but has threatened 5,500 since erupting. It briefly threatened San Francisco's power supply, causing Governor Jerry Brown to extend a state of emgency to San Francisco. As of Thursday, 102 evacuees stayed at an evacutation center set up at Mother Lode Fairgrounds in Sonora. There are not many evacuees because most of the homes under evacuation are vacation homes. This fire comes in as a "close second" to the wildfires in 1987 that burned hundreds of thousands of acres. For the most part campers in the Yosemite Valley are unaffected because the wildfire has been confined in the more remote northwestern section of the park.

Proactiv Advertisement

In this advertisement, Katy Perry is the face of Proactiv. There are large words which display a quote by Katy Perry. Under the large text is smaller text explaining that Katy Perry uses Proactiv. The Proactiv bottles are also seen in this advertisement. This advertisement uses most of the rhetorical strategies. The subject of this advertisement is acne, the audience are those who have acne, the speakers are Katy Perry/Proactiv, and the purpose is to inform and to pursued. The ethos is seen in automatic form, Katy Perry is a famous musician and Proactiv is a well known acne clearing brand. More people are likely to buy Proactiv when they see Katy Perry uses it too. Proactiv earns the credibility to talk because they specialize in acne care. Logos is shown when it says "24/7 skin care". That can be proven through research done on the brand. In the bottom text it says, "be like Katy Perry" that is pathos because that is pursuading people to use it and look like a famous musician. In the smaller text is also says, "Be confident. Be in control. Be Proactiv" that would motivate people to purchase the item in hopes that they will be confident and in control. This advertisement is effective because it uses several rhetorical strategies and it grantees that Proactiv will work. It also uses ethos, logos and pathos.

My Favorite Book

My favorite book is A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. It is my favorite book because it is written in a way that makes one feel the mortification the women in the story are put through. In A Thousand Splendid Suns several forms of relationships are seen. A father daughter relationship, a relationship between two wives, and a husband wife relationship. The two women of the story subterfuge to escape their husband. It also shows an insight of the arcane lifestyle of some Muslim families. A Thousand Splendid Suns is fictional, but it is based on several real Muslim traditions. Such as arranged marriages and women wearing a burqa when in public. It is captivating to read about arcane lifestyles and to see many different forms of relationships. In A Thousand Splendid Suns the readers are taken through heart break after heart break, making the book impossible to put down. It is a saddening story, but it opens the readers' eyes to what a woman's life could be like. I would recommend A Thousand Splendid Suns to those who have read The Kite Runner. Khaled Hosseini wrote both books in a similar style. If the reader enjoyed The Kite Runner they are likely to enjoy A Thousand Splendid Suns.
