Quote

"Tell me, then, what thou art, and who sent thee hither."
"Tell me, mother!" said the child.
"Thy Heavenly Father sent thee!" answer Hester Prynne.
...
"He did not send me!" cried she, positively. "I have no Heavenly Father!"
The Scarlet Letter pg. 90

This exchange between Hester Prynne and Pearl takes place at their home in the outskirts of Boston. This is significant to the overall book because it shows the readers that this child is different, she understands her situation greatly. Throughout the book it is repeatedly stated that Pearl is an imp, she knows she is different but she has odd ways of showing her knowledge. Before Pearl could even speak she understood she was born out of an act of lust, not love. The behavior of this child seems to embody that she is born in sin, for she is misbehaved. The child's response with "I have no Heavenly Father!" shows that Pearl understands she is born in sin and Hester just realizes her daughter knows of her mistakes. The child saying this also means that she is not the traditional Catholic child, which raises concerns amongst the Puritan community. When Pearl is asked who is her father, if not the Heavenly Father, her response is that she was picked from a rose bush. The impact this has on the book so far is that upon raising concern in the community they want to take Pearl away from Hester which leads into revealing the father of Pearl.

False Alarm

Exactly three weeks after the shooting in LAX another shooting scare took place. Though this time it was only a false alarm. An anonymous caller reported seeing a man with a gun in Terminal Four, immediately police responded. At the same time reports of shots being fired in Terminal Five came in, everyone was evacuated from the area. All these reports caused extreme panic in the airport. Peter Ward, an IT consultant, said he saw people diving behind counters and about two dozen police came in with their guns drawn. The police came in with guns and bomb sniffing dogs, they formed a barricade at the security entrance, directed people out, and scanned the area for the gunman. After all the chaos  it turned out that there was no gunman on the grounds of LAX, it was indeed a false alarm. Police conclude that the gun shot like noise was a car accident that took place outside the terminal. With all the shootings taking place lately, it makes complete sense for the people of the airport to panic at a loud noise. The fear people have formed to guns adds another reason to why gun control needs to become extremely strict.

Puritan Clothing

Puritans dressed in very simple looking clothes. The colors of their clothes consisted of black, gray, brown, and deep red. Nothing too bright and eye catching, for that would go against their beliefs. The women's clothes consisted of many things; stockings, petticoat, chemise, bolster, bodice, skirt, apron, coif, outer gown and shoes. They wore a bodice which went to the waist line and had short tabs at the bottom edge. It gave the women a long and slim waist, which was what was greatly desired by all. Though the bodice was low cut, it was always layered by the chemise. Under their skirt, women would wear a bolster (thickly padded roll). This gave the allusion of wider hips. Sometimes the skirt would have an opening, revealing a decretive petticoat. Other times, when the skirt did not have an opening they would wear an apron. The women's shoes resembled the men's, low heeled and round toed. Men's clothes also consisted of many things; stockings, shirt, breeches, waistcoat, doublet, cape or coat, cap or hat and boots or shoes. The shirts had full sleeves and over it went the sleeveless waistcoat. Over the waistcoat was a doublet which had tabs on the bottom edges, just above the hips. The breeches (pants) came down to the bottom of the men's knees and they were very puffy. Their stockings came up to be just over their pants, leaving no skin exposed. Lastly came the low heeled and round toed shoes. A Puritan's outfit consisted of many different clothes, but in the end it came together looking very simple.

Make a Wish  has done it again. They have made a little boy's dream come true in a way that no one would have ever imagined. The city of San Francisco was transformed into Batman's Gotham City. About 12,000 volunteers lined the streets of the city in support of the young boy who has been battling cancer since he was twenty months old. He has been in remission since June and all he wanted was to be Batman.
Make a Wish does nothing half way. They organized a city wide rescue mission for the boy. Police Chief Greg Suhr, asked Miles, the young boy, for help in Gotham City. Melinda Haag, U.S. attorney for the Northern District of California, and FBI Special Agent in Charge David J. Johnson announced formal charges against Riddler and Penguin. Miles even had a Bat Mobile, which was a Lamborghini, to help him get through the mission.
Thousands of viewers swelled with emotion and pride, many said this event "restored their faith in humanity". 230,000 tweets and 19,000 pictures came up under the hashtage "SFBatKid". This day brought all of the United States together, including President Obama, to witness something spectacular. Imagine what the young boy felt as he looked upon the crowd of thousands cheering him on. If a story like this does not bring emotion out of one, then what will?

SOAPST

Knowing what one reads is very important, otherwise they can go through a whole book without knowing what is going on. One way to understand the context of a written piece is by know the SOAPST. Education the type of text that needs to be understood. The speaker of Education is Ralp Waldo Emerson who is a full time poet, essay write, and lecturer. The occasion of this writing is 1820s-1830s. This book was written long ago, but Emerson wanted his writing to be viewed by a wide audience. He successfully was able to reach large numbers of audience by writing this book in modern English. The sole purpose of Emerson's essay was to inform and reform. He wanted his audience to see how schools teach  and treat their student body. This essay was teaching the people how schools should be with education. Emerson felt that the education of that time was bad, this is the subject of his text. Emerson is writing his book with much confidence in his tone, but makes sure to criticize in a kind manor. Emerson wanted the education system to change, for the students were not and in some cases are still not being educated well. Education is a work in progress, maybe years from now the education will be closer to what Emerson desired so greatly.

LAX Shooting

- "Travelers shaken up and stranded as LAX is thrown into turmoil"
- November 1, 2013
http://www.latimes.com/local/la-me-lax-shooting-scene-20131102,0,3080177.story#axzz2jSGtO43h

The idea of a shooting has become a common occurrence now a days. It has come to a point that hearing about a shooting is no longer surprising. That alone, is a problem in and of itself.
As unshocking hearing about shootings has become, to some degree is scars one to hear about it happening. On November 1st, the terminals of LAX were shaken with a shooting. Hundreds ran for their lives. Leaving behind wallets, luggage, and their travel plans. Once the shooter was controlled passengers continued to wait for the terminals to reopen. They roamed the roads of the airport, looking for a way out. The flights that were coming into the airport were diverted to other airports, flights living were canceled or delayed until further notice. As the hours wore on, these stranded passengers left to nearby hotels and restaurants. Those who did not know what was going on parked their cars in nearby lots and made their way to the airport by foot.
Sepulveda  blvd was eerily empty. The bumper to bumper traffic was replaced with travelers lugging their luggage down the street. One women compared that moment to a scene at the ending of a disaster movie, an analogy that is quite accurate. Many shared their scary experience with the news crews. A couple coming to visit family with their one year old son were forced to wait in the plane for four hours, the flight was delayed; had it been on time they would be in the middle of the shooting with their baby. Another man was at the airport waiting for his elderly mom, who does not speak English; he had not heard from her and did not know her where abouts during the shooting. As most worried and stressed over their canceled plans and missing loved ones, others stood grateful for having not been in the area during the shooting.
Shootings such as this not only affect the victims there at that moment, but also affects the people around the area as well as the loved ones. Situations like this are scary and unimaginable to be a part of. If only there were ways to prevent shootings.

Education

Schools teach the basic classes. Math, history, English, and science. Of course those are good to learn. It is knowledge that is always a bonus to have, however; most of what students learn in those classes are soon forgotten. Sit through the class, take notes, study the notes, take the midterm/final, and then forget. Most of what is taught may come in handy down the line, but not always. Knowing these subjects does not guarantee a succesful future. One can be a high school drop out and be able to run a sucessful buisness or major coorperation, just based off general knowledge of the world. Such as Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. This is not to say that one should not go to school, they should because there is no guarantee they will be successful like a few others are. But high schools should teach more practical things that will be needed once the students graduate. Such as how to buy a home, taxes, keeping track of savings/spendings, and how loans work. Those are the things that no doubt everyone will need to know after high school. In the recent years, schools have started to teach this practical knowledge. These new lessons will help students a great deal down the line.

Bronx Fire

Friday, around eight at night, the power to an apartment was shut off do to unpaid bills. As a result a twenty-five year old women turned on candles to provide light for her and her five children. The lit candles caught the home on fire. Tashika Turner, owner of the house that caught on fire, called for help through her window. Her neighbor came to rescue, however; the fire was too heavy to get in the apartment. The neighbor heard the hollering of the children in the home, but had no way to enter. It took 100 firefighters and ninety minutes to tame the fire in the six story apartment complex. But it was too late. Three young boys had passed. Elijah Artis, 5; Jeremiah Artis, 2; and Michael Turner, 4 months. They were declared dead upon arrival at Lincoln Medical Center. Tashika Turner survived the fire and was released. Her two daughters, ages 4 and 4 months, are still in the hospital in stable conditions. The city tries to avoid turning off the power by putting struggling owners on a payment plan. But Turner owed well over thousands of dollars, this forced them to take greater measure by shutting her lights down. The question is, whose fault was this fire? Tashika Turner's for not paying her bills or the city for turning off her lights?

Child found in Greece

News from Athens has reported a four year old child was found during a Roma camp raid in Greece, during a search for weapons and drugs. The Greek police are looking for the biological of this child, who goes by the name of Maria. This child was spotted by a women who accompanied the police during the raid. The Ekathimerini news site reports that the women became suspicious of Maria's origins because she looked nothing like the couple who claimed to be her parents. A DNA test was performed on the child and the couple, proving that they are not her parents. The couple have been arrested under charges of suspicion of child abduction and child smuggling. The couple had registration of fourteen children, but only four were found in the camp. Many of the documents turned out to be false. The couple gave different stories on how Maria came into their custody.  The couple said she was handed to them by strangers and that she was found under a blanket. Marietta Palavra, the couple's lawyer, states that the couple took Maria out of kindness when she was just a few days old. Palavra says this child is loved and cared for by this couple. This does not make the couple kidnappers. The lawyer also pointed out that Greek families often register their children under multiple names to receive more welfare benefits. Maria is now being taken care of by a Greek charity, A Child's Smile.

Reopening Utah's National Parks

- Lesile Bentz

Unfortunately because of the government shutdown the national parks have been closed. But Utah has found a way around the shutdown, which allows them to reopen their national parks. Five national parks and three other nationally run locations will reopen by October 12, 2013. Gary Herbert, Utah's governor, announced this news on Thursday. He states that a deal had been reached with the U.S Department of the Interior Secretary, Sally Jewell. An official press release states that Utah will pay the National Park Service up to $1.67 million to reopen eight parks for no more then ten days, if the shutdown ends before these ten days then the state will receive a refund. Herbert states that Utah's national parks are the backbone on many rural economies and the Utah locals are paying a heavy price for this shutdown. He wants the world to know Utah is welcoming visitors once again. The month of October is an especially profitable month for Utah because the weather attracts the tourists at this time. Normally, $100 million are the estimated profits of October, for parks to be closed at this time would cause a negative impact for the state. The process of reopening parks after receiving the money to do so takes time, but they are all expected to be open on Saturday. Utah is expected to be reimbursed for the money spent, but Congress is under no obligation to refund the money. This means Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capital Reef, Zion, Natural Bridges, Cedar Breaks, and Glen Canyon will all be open for visitors.

Jacqueline's Speech Project

Jacqueline's project was on William Faulkner's Nobel Peace Prize acceptance. Faulkner's speech is on what he encourages young poets to write on. He encourages them to be original, honest, and strong voiced. He believes that writers should write on things that lifts the human spirit, not brings it down, they should bring hope and courage to the soul. Faulkner also advises to not write about lust but love, victory not winnings, and on human spirit not revenge. I think Jacqueline did a good job on her project. She met almost every requirement on the project and transferred the content of the speech to the power point well. There are two things I believe she could have done better. The first, and biggest thing that stood out to me were all the transitions that were placed in the project. The project requirements clearly stated not to use transitions. It took away from the overall project, distracting the class from the project content and turning our attention to the cool transitions. The second thing that could have been improved were a few of the images used in the project. They seemed to be irrelevant to the content being discussed. Other than that, Jacqueline's project was well done and presented nicely.

Little boy on his way to Sin City

A 9 year old boy traveled Thursday on flight 1651, a Boeing 757 from Minneapolis to Las Vegas, without a boarding pass and completely alone. How did this little boy get through security and onto the flight? Transportation Security Administration has been investigating this unusual event. Patrick Hogan, spokesperson for the Minneapolis International Airport, said that during the flight the crew began to wonder of the child's circumstance. In Hogan's statement, he says that upon arrival in Nevada the boy was turned over to Child Protective Services. Fortunately, the crew was able to take appropriate action of this situation, ensuring the child's safety. Delta is working with authorities and has taken the incident extremely seriously. Delta's normal procedure for children between the ages of 5 to 14 can travel alone, but they are well supervised by a Delta  employee. The airport officials have reviewed the footage and believe that the boy had no ticket to board the plane, he also spent a lot of time in the airport before boarding the plane to Vegas. This young boy spent over a day in the airport, passing his time by picking up luggage from the carousal and taking it to the food court, later ditching the bags by asking a worker to watch it while he went to the restroom. A young boy, all alone, ditching luggage, failed to grab any workers attention. Hogan says, the fact that the fact that the child's action was not detected until he boarded a plane is very concerning. This may have been a first for Minneapolis, but it is not something that has never happened before. For many, the biggest question is, where are this boy's parents and why did they not notice his disappearance?

Declaration of Independence

In 1776, upon the signing of the Declaration of Independence, America was freed from British rule. But that freedom did not come easily. It took Thomas Jefferson and a few other men to put together a document listing all the complaints the colonists had against King George III. One of the eighteen complaints listed in the book was, "He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their Public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measure." In this compliment it states that during the times King George would consider the colonists' opinions he would make it as inconvenient for them as he could. He did this by holding the meetings in distant places so that by the time the colonists arrived through inconvenient travel they would be too tired to fight for their rights. In the end they would submit to King George, which is bad for the people but perfectly convenient for him. In modern America, if the meeting is held in a distant place, a comfortable means of travel is provided to the representatives. So they are able to choose what is right, instead of having to submit to others because of fatigue. Another complaint was, "He refused his Assent to laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good." This means King George did not pass laws that were necessary for the colonists. He only considered what is good to the British, not the colonies. Now a days things have changed completely. A local and state government has been put in place and they have the right to make laws that are beneficial to their state. Also the president can only make laws that benefit his own people, not others. The list of complaints are lengthy, but they were the key that changed America's government structure to be more beneficial to their citizens.

Chicago Shooting

- Monica Davey and Timothy Williams
- September 20, 2013
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/21/us/chicago-shooting.html?hp&_r=0

The New York Times reports a shooting in a South Side park located in Chicago on Thursday night, wounding thirteen people. The gunman was armed with an assault-style rifle equipped with a high-capacity magazine. Gary McCarthy, Chicago police superintendent,  states that having a military-grade weapon in the streets of Chicago are not acceptable. Police report that two died during the Cornell Square shooting and the rest are wounded. Among the wounded is a three-year-old boy who was struck in the face, but expected to live. The little boy as well as two other people were hospitalized in critical condition but they are all expected to survive. The police are uncertain on whom the intended target is and what the motive was, they are even unsure of how many people fired weapons. McCarthy said there may have been one gunman or up to three. Chicago had more than 500 homicides last year, that is more than New York which has three times as many people. These violent crimes happen in the poorer parts of Chicago. Mayor Rahm Emanuel states that this crime will be prosecuted and everyone is encouraged to step out with details.  It caused an uproar with community, more witnesses came out for this shooting than any other. In recent months, Chicago has increased the amount of police on duty in twenty zones. That has decreased shootings by twenty percent, but the shooting that took place Thursday night was not one of those zones. The city is doing better, but has yet more improvement to make.

Monitoring Social Media

The Glendale school district is now monitoring postings on social media by their middle and high school students. They are looking for possible violence, drug use, bullying, truancy, suicidal threats, and use of social media during school hours. The monitoring of 14,000 students costs the distract $40,500. The CEO of Geo Listening, Chris Frydrych, hires no more then ten full time employs to monitor these students. Critics relate the monitoring to government stalking, but school officials say the purpose is for the safety of the students. During a trial run last spring they were able to save a student from taking his own life. In a more recent incident they found a student posting a picture of a gun, the parents of the child were contacted and the child was educated on why posting such photos are wrong. No disciplinary action was taken on that child, in fact no discipline as been needed thus far. But there is no question that authorizes will get involved if the incident is severe enough, such as a threat to shooting the school. Frydrych's firm monitors students ages 13 and older, the parents of students that aged do not need to give permission to monitor their child. The principals of the Glendale schools receive a daily email on the comments that may cause concern. Lee Tien, senior staff attorney for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, says that when the government gathers information on what happens out of school crosses a line. School officials state that they do not view what happens on private accounts. Frydrych's firm does not hack into private postings, emails, or texts. Students can easily switch their account setting to "private", avoiding being watched.

Rush

- Todd McCarthy
- September 3, 2013
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movie/rush/review/619675?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+thr%2Fnews+(The+Hollywood+Reporter+-+Top+Stories)

Todd McCarthy's review of Ron Howard's Rush goes in depth on the negative aspects of the movie. McCarthy uses claim of value and claim of fact in his review. Using these claims he does not give the best review, it is not terrible nor is it good. McCarthy's claim of value is "Universal won't be seeing anything resembling Fast & Furious business at the box office." In this movie Hunt's race team is falling apart but he wants to do everything to beat Laude in the race. Hunt's wife leaves him, that public humiliation motivates him to do better. During a race Laude get's into a terrible accident, blaming Hunt for it. In the end those two characters are far too different to be friends. McCarthy does not have much to say about the movie, he uses claim of fact to say  "Morgan hasn't bothered to add more than one dimension... nor to provide especially memorable dialogue." He also says the reason people (women) would see this movie is because of Chris Hemsworth's good looks. McCarthy compares Rush to other race movies, such as Grand Prix and Le Mans to Days of Thunder. He says these movies did a much better job at showing the excitement of the track and developing the drama. McCarthy goes as far as saying a the racing footage is not great, there are no amazing racing sequences. Todd McCarthy gives a strict thumbs down to Rush, a movie starting Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl. It is evident that this review is for the most part a claim of value, because Rush was good enough to make it to The Toronto Film Festival which is second best next to Cannes.

Electronic Cigarettes

In the article "Electronics cigarettes growing in popularity with teens" it says, in the recent years the use of electronic cigarettes among teens has nearly doubled. A new federal report says that one out of ten American teens have used an electronic cigarette, 3% of middle school students have given it a try as well. That means about 1.78 million children and teens have tried smoking a battery powered cigarette. These electronic cigarettes are no better then regular cigarettes, they have nicotine and traces of cancer causing compounds have been found. The battery powered cigarette comes in flavors such as mint or chocolate which has health advocates fearing that it will turn teens on to regular cigarettes. The risk of nicotine addiction because of electronic cigarettes has become a serious concern. 76.3% of e-cigarette smokers have also smoked regular cigarettes. This shows a concern to those students who have had e-cigarettes but have not yet tried regular cigarettes. Smoking is the No. 1 cause of preventable death in the United States. Erika Sward says with all the flavors offered it is no question electronic cigarettes are being marketed toward teens. E-cigarette manufacturers insist that they are not marketing to youth. The FDA has not approved this product, but according to the authors of the study it is critical to develop strategies to prevent sales and use to the youth.

Cookies 'n Cream

My favorite ice cream is simple but delicious. Cookies 'n Cream is the flavor I do not get tired of. I was  young when I first tried this ice cream, no older then 8, but ever since then I have always loved it. I love Oreo cookies and vanilla ice cream, this is a cross over of both which is heavenly to eat. This ice cream has been around for a long time, since 1978 (logos). People often call Cookies 'n Cream "King Kong of ice cream" because of how quickly it topped the World's Favorite Ice Cream Flavor list. Cookies 'n Cream is sweet, rich, crunchy, flavorful (asyndeton). There is debate as to who invented this delicious ice cream, but who ever did is someone I will forever be grateful to. Who ever the inventor is must know the change he made in the ice cream lovers life (rhetorical statement). You can eat  this ice cream in a cone, in a bowl, or with a brownie. All of which are good, but my personal preference is to eat it with a cone. Young or old, happy or sad, Cookies 'n Cream is an ice cream people of all ages and moods like. When eating Cookies 'n Cream do not think about your diet, the calories, or your guilt. Just eat and enjoy.

Interracial Couples

-Emily Alpert

Berto Solis and Nancy Thuvanuti are an interracial couple, their families thought they would never last, but they have been together for 6 years. There are many couples in America whom are in the same situation as these two. Since 2000 the number of interracial couples have more then doubled, says U.S Census Bureau. Racially and ethnically mixed couples are more likely unmarried and living together, than married. Scholars wonder why interracial couples are more likely to move in together without being married. They debate as to if it is because interracial couples have more barriers to cross for marriage. It is easier to move in together because couples do not need a blessing from the families like they would for marriage. Older Americans, between the age of 50-64, are disapproving of marrying out of race. The common reason for disapproval is fearing that the culture will get lost. Some couples will be successful in showing their families that other races have a lot in common, but those who are unsuccessful opt with delaying marriage. Others may not have the same acceptance issue with their family, they simply choose to go the untraditional rout and not get married. 12% of same-sex relationships are interracial. Same sex couples have a "smaller marriage market", making them more likely to be open to interracial relationships.

SOAPST

In "Blood, Toil, Tears, and Sweat", a speech given by Winston Churchill; the text, audience, speaker, as well as a few other aspects contribute to making this speech achieve its goal. Winston Churchill's speech was given in England during May of 1940. He uses a positive and confident tone, to inform and to motivate the people of England about war and the recent change in government. It was the first speech Churchill made as Prime Minister of Britain. His confidence is seen when making a reference to "blood, toil, tears, and sweat", it motivates the people to do their best and it shows that Churchill is by their side. His postive tone in shown when Churchill says "...victory at all costs", it shows the people that Churchill is positive about the outcome of war which brings a sense of comfort to the situation. Toward the end, Churchill starts using pronouns such as "us"and "our". Winston Churchill says, "...let us go forward together with our united strength" making him one with the audience, it shows the people of England that they are not alone in it. The usage of the pronouns complete the relationship between the speaker, audience, and subject.

One of the Largest Fires in California History

125,000 acres have been burned in and around Yosemite National Park, this fire is considered one of California's largest wildfires in recent history. The fire has doubled in size since Thursday night and it is only 5% contained as of August 24, 2013. This wildfire is considered a "crown fire" because of it's tendency to burn and travel through the tree tops. More then 2,600 firefighters were working to contain the fire and keep it away from buildings and campgrounds. The firefighters have been assisted by trench-digging bulldozers and water-dropping aircrafts. The wildfire has destroyed nine buildings, but has threatened 5,500 since erupting. It briefly threatened San Francisco's power supply, causing Governor Jerry Brown to extend a state of emgency to San Francisco. As of Thursday, 102 evacuees stayed at an evacutation center set up at Mother Lode Fairgrounds in Sonora. There are not many evacuees because most of the homes under evacuation are vacation homes. This fire comes in as a "close second" to the wildfires in 1987 that burned hundreds of thousands of acres. For the most part campers in the Yosemite Valley are unaffected because the wildfire has been confined in the more remote northwestern section of the park.

Proactiv Advertisement

In this advertisement, Katy Perry is the face of Proactiv. There are large words which display a quote by Katy Perry. Under the large text is smaller text explaining that Katy Perry uses Proactiv. The Proactiv bottles are also seen in this advertisement. This advertisement uses most of the rhetorical strategies. The subject of this advertisement is acne, the audience are those who have acne, the speakers are Katy Perry/Proactiv, and the purpose is to inform and to pursued. The ethos is seen in automatic form, Katy Perry is a famous musician and Proactiv is a well known acne clearing brand. More people are likely to buy Proactiv when they see Katy Perry uses it too. Proactiv earns the credibility to talk because they specialize in acne care. Logos is shown when it says "24/7 skin care". That can be proven through research done on the brand. In the bottom text it says, "be like Katy Perry" that is pathos because that is pursuading people to use it and look like a famous musician. In the smaller text is also says, "Be confident. Be in control. Be Proactiv" that would motivate people to purchase the item in hopes that they will be confident and in control. This advertisement is effective because it uses several rhetorical strategies and it grantees that Proactiv will work. It also uses ethos, logos and pathos.

My Favorite Book

My favorite book is A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. It is my favorite book because it is written in a way that makes one feel the mortification the women in the story are put through. In A Thousand Splendid Suns several forms of relationships are seen. A father daughter relationship, a relationship between two wives, and a husband wife relationship. The two women of the story subterfuge to escape their husband. It also shows an insight of the arcane lifestyle of some Muslim families. A Thousand Splendid Suns is fictional, but it is based on several real Muslim traditions. Such as arranged marriages and women wearing a burqa when in public. It is captivating to read about arcane lifestyles and to see many different forms of relationships. In A Thousand Splendid Suns the readers are taken through heart break after heart break, making the book impossible to put down. It is a saddening story, but it opens the readers' eyes to what a woman's life could be like. I would recommend A Thousand Splendid Suns to those who have read The Kite Runner. Khaled Hosseini wrote both books in a similar style. If the reader enjoyed The Kite Runner they are likely to enjoy A Thousand Splendid Suns.
