Colbert Report - Cross Controversy

In this segment The Colbert Report discusses atheists and the ridiculous statements they make. Apparently the 9/11 memorial ground, aka "Ground Zero", has displayed a cross made out of beams from the towers. Atheist believe that it is not okay to display a "christian cross" because it causes them discomfort. Stephen Colbert takes the opportunity to satire the atheist thinking process on this particular issue. Mentioning how the cross will cause them "anguish" but nothing else in the memorial ground would, as long as the cross is not there they would have a great time exploring the 9/11 memorial. Obviously that is untrue, cross or no cross a trip to "Ground Zero" would be saddening. In this segment satire is being used through obvious sarcasm. Stephen Colbert is out right making fun of the atheists. One could hardly consider this complaint by atheists an issue. It is more of a dumb statement and satire aids us in understanding the ridiculousness of it.
My opinion on this video is that Stephen Colbert goes about making fun of the atheists well. He is brutally honest in a sarcastic way and that is always humorous. I think this "issue" could not have been discussed in a serious way, it is something to be made fun of. The Colbert Report did a fantastic job at presenting this topic with satire.

  1. I do not have a problem with atheists, but they should not be making remarks about the cross on the memorial ground. That cross symbolizes the lives that were lost and to say that it causes them “discomfort” is rude. They should respect other families and the people who died that day. The way Stephen Colbert made fun of the atheists was funny and deserved.

  2. I do not have a problem with people and religious differences, as long as they do not discuss their beliefs with me. Atheists talking negatively about the 9/11 memorial just because there are cross markings is simply downright primitive. A memorial is somewhere to go and pay respects, and crosses should not be brought up as an excuse not to. Colbert's sarcastic segment was very entertaining to watch. This post was well-written and a good read. Terrific work, Maria!

  3. The best part about the Colbert Report is that news can grab and keep the attention of many people through a satirical strategy that causes entertainment. Issues, such as this one are important to hear about because they show the true ridiculousness of it all. Atheists claiming the cross at the 9/11 memorial causes them "discomfort" is downright obnoxious and disrespectful to those who tragically died on that day. It is well deserved to be called out on in the media for others to be informed of this rude behavior.
